The author has identified the following significant results. Ship detection via LANDSAT MSS data was demonstrated. In addition, information on ship size, orientation, and movement was obtained. Band 7 was used for the initial detection followed by confirmation on other MSS bands. Under low turbidity, as experienced in open seas, the detection of ships 100 m long was verified and detection of ships down to 30 m length theorized. High turbidity and sea state inhibit ship detection by decreasing S/N ratios. The radiance effect from snow of local slope angles and orientation was also studied. Higher radiance values and even overloading in three bands were recorded for the sun-facing slope. The author has identified the following significant results. Inspection of pixels obtained from LANDSAT of New Zealand revealed that not only can ships and their wakes be detected, but that information on the size, state of motion, and direction of movement was inferred by calculating the total number of pixels occupied by the vessel and wake, the orientation of these pixels, and the sum of their radiance values above the background level. Computer enhanced images showing the Waimihia State Forest and much of Kaingaroa State Forest on 22 December 1975 were examined. Most major forest categories were distinguished on LANDSAT imagery. However, the LANDSAT imagery seemed to be most useful for updating and checking existing forest maps, rather than making new maps with many forest categories. Snow studies were performed using two basins: Six Mile Creek and Mt. Robert. The differences in radiance levels indicated that a greater areal snow cover in Six Mile Creek Basin with the effect of lower radiance values from vegetation/snow regions. The author has identified the following significant results. As part of the tape reformatting process, a simple coded picture output program was developed. This represents Pixel's radiance level by one of a 47 character set on a nonoverprinting line printer. It not only has aided in locating areas for the reformatting process, but has also formed the foundation for a supervised clustering package. This in turn has led to a simplistic but effective thematic mapping package
Correlated Topological Insulators and the Fractional Magnetoelectric Effect
Topological insulators are characterized by the presence of gapless surface
modes protected by time-reversal symmetry. In three space dimensions the
magnetoelectric response is described in terms of a bulk theta term for the
electromagnetic field. Here we construct theoretical examples of such phases
that cannot be smoothly connected to any band insulator. Such correlated
topological insulators admit the possibility of fractional magnetoelectric
response described by fractional theta/pi. We show that fractional theta/pi is
only possible in a gapped time reversal invariant system of bosons or fermions
if the system also has deconfined fractional excitations and associated
degenerate ground states on topologically non-trivial spaces. We illustrate
this result with a concrete example of a time reversal symmetric topological
insulator of correlated bosons with theta = pi/4. Extensions to electronic

The author has identified the following significant results. Results of the atmospheric extinction measurements show clearly the greater opacity of the atmosphere in MSS band 4 which is due to Rayleigh scattering. Atmospheric water vapor absorbs strongly in a wide region between 900 nm and 1000 nm, and this results in a consistently higher extinction coefficient than would otherwise be expected in MSS band 7. The short term fluctuations tend to be greater in band 7 than in the other bands, and this effect is probably due to variations of water vapor concentration in the instrument line of sight. These high extinction coefficients and short term fluctuations in band 7 were observed at Menindee which is in a semi-desert region in western New South Wales
An epidemiological study of diabetes mellitus in dogs attending first opinion practice in the UK
This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of canine diabetes mellitus (DM) in primary-care clinics in England, to identify risk factors associated with DM and to describe the survival of affected dogs. Cases of DM were identified within the electronic patient records of 89 small-animal practices. A nested case–control study identified risk factors for the diagnosis of DM using logistic regression models. Cox proportional hazards models were used to analyse variables associated with survival. Four-hundred and thirty-nine canine DM cases were identified, giving an apparent prevalence of 0.34% (95% CI 0.31% to 0.37%). Neutered males were at an increased risk of diabetes compared with entire males, whereas neutering was not associated with DM in females. When compared with crossbred dogs, Yorkshire terriers had increased odds, whereas German shepherd dogs and golden retrievers had lower odds of DM. Being classified as overweight and having a diagnosis of pancreatitis, hyperadrenocorticism or a urinary tract infection were positively associated with DM. Older dogs and those diagnosed with pancreatitis had a higher hazard of death, whereas insured and neutered dogs had a lower hazard. This study provides an objective assessment of canine DM using primary-care veterinary practice data and is a valuable benchmark against which future epidemiological trends in DM can be assessed and improvements in the management of DM in primary-care practice can be judged
Canine dystocia in 50 UK first-opinion emergency-care veterinary practices: prevalence and risk factors
Dystocia can represent a major welfare issue for dogs of certain breeds and morphologies. First-opinion emergency-care veterinary caseloads represent a useful data resource for epidemiological research because dystocia can often result in emergency veterinary care. The study analysed a merged database of clinical records from 50 first-opinion emergency-care veterinary practices participating in the VetCompass Programme. Multivariable logistic regression modelling was used for risk factors analysis. There were 701 dystocia cases recorded among 18,758 entire female dogs, resulting in a dystocia prevalence of 3.7 per cent (95 per cent CI 3.5–4.0 per cent). Breeds with the highest odds of dystocia compared with crossbred bitches were French Bulldog (OR: 15.9, 95 per cent CI 9.3 to 27.2, P<0.001), Boston Terrier (OR: 12.9, 95 per cent CI 5.6 to 29.3, P<0.001), Chihuahua (OR: 10.4, 95 per cent CI 7.0 to 15.7, P<0.001) and Pug (OR: 11.3, 95 per cent CI 7.1 to 17.9, P<0.001). Bitches aged between 3.0 and 5.9 years had 3.1 (95 per cent CI 2.6 to 3.7, P<0.001) times the odds of dystocia compared with bitches aged under 3.0years. Certain breeds, including some brachycephalic and toy breeds, appeared at high risk of dystocia. Opportunities to improve this situation are discussed
Open-closed string correspondence: D-brane decay in curved space
This paper analyzes the effect of curved closed string backgrounds on the
stability of D-branes within boundary string field theory. We identify the
non-local open string background that implements shifts in the closed string
background and analyze the tachyonic sector off-shell. The renormalization
group flow reveals some characteristic properties, which are expected for a
curved background, like the absence of a stable space-filling brane. In
3-dimensions we describe tachyon condensation processes to lower-dimensional
branes, including a curved 2-dimensional brane. We argue that this 2-brane is
perturbatively stable. This is in agreement with the known maximally symmetric
WZW-branes and provides further support to the bulk-boundary factorization
approach to open-closed string correspondence.Comment: 23 pages, harvma
Quantum spin liquids and the metal-insulator transition in doped semiconductors
We describe a new possible route to the metal-insulator transition in doped
semiconductors such as Si:P or Si:B. We explore the possibility that the loss
of metallic transport occurs through Mott localization of electrons into a
quantum spin liquid state with diffusive charge neutral "spinon" excitations.
Such a quantum spin liquid state can appear as an intermediate phase between
the metal and the Anderson-Mott insulator. An immediate testable consequence is
the presence of metallic thermal conductivity at low temperature in the
electrical insulator near the metal-insulator transition. Further we show that
though the transition is second order the zero temperature residual electrical
conductivity will jump as the transition is approached from the metallic side.
However the electrical conductivity will have a non-monotonic temperature
dependence that may complicate the extrapolation to zero temperature.
Signatures in other experiments and some comparisons with existing data are
